Characters

Each character has a unique personality, but characters of the same type usually share common characteristics, such as gender, age, identity, temperament, etc. Classifying characters based on these characteristics to is called “Hang Dang.” The roles of opera characters are performed by opera actors, and they are divided into four basic types: “Sheng, Dan, Jing, and Chou” according to the type of role.
Sheng: Sheng is a type of Hang Dang that plays a male role. Sheng includes:
- Lao Sheng: Mainly refers to the roles of emperors and elegant middle-aged and elderly people.
- Hsiao Sheng: Mainly refers to young and handsome male characters.
- Wu Sheng: Mainly refers to brave warriors or green forest heroes.
- Hung Sheng: Specifically refers to the old man with red facial makeup.
- Wa Wa Sheng: Several categories of children’s characters in the play.
- Bearded Sheng: Because the role wears a beard, the roll is called “bearded male role.”

Dan: Dan is the playing of various female characters of different ages, personalities, and identities. Dan can be divided into:
- Tsing Yi (Cheng Dan) a dignified and elegant woman.
- Hua Dan: An innocent and lively girl or a lively young woman.
- Wu Dan: A brave female character, especially one who fights.
- Dao Ma Dan: A young and middle-aged woman who is good at martial arts and does not need to fight.
- Lao Dan: An older woman.
- Tsai Dan: A funny and witty comedic character.

Jing: Commonly known as Hua Lian, which is usually male roles. Jing can be divided into:
- Zheng Jing (Da Hua Lian) A loyal minister with a high status and a steady demeanor.
- Fu Jing (Er Hua Lian) Commonly known as Chia Zi Hua Lian, which are rough and reckless characters.
- Wu Jing (Wu Hua Lian) A character who mainly plays martial arts.
- White-faced villains: The roles are sinister, cruel, cunning villains, all of whom are cunning and treacherous.

Chou: Also known as Hsiao Hua Lian and San Hua Lian, which refers to those funny or ugly characters, both male and female. Chou includes:
- Wen Chou: A clever, funny or cunning character.
- Wu Chou: A smart, capable and humorous hero.
